Old Time Music Comes Alive in Portland

The 18th Portland Old Time Music Gathering gives all attendees a chance to play, dance and connect over five lively days in January,

With the tap of a button, most of us can now stream virtually any song ever recorded. But participating in the rich history of American folk music through jamming, dancing and learning? Sorry, Spotify — that takes a community.

Fortunately for Portlanders, one of the most vibrant “old time” music scenes in America exists right here in the Rose City. This January these fiddlers, banjo players, guitarists, square dance callers, harmony singers and others will once again come together for the Portland Old Time Music Gathering, presented by local nonprofit group Bubbaville.

Old time music is based on fiddle tunes from Appalachia and other regions of the Southern U.S., and it served as the precursor to bluegrass and country. Over the last several decades, Portland has become a hub for this truly American genre of music.

Entering its 18th year, the Gathering is centered around participation. The region’s finest old time bands provide the musical backdrop for giant square dances where everyone is welcome and beginners can find themselves promenading in no time. In addition, centuries-old fiddle tunes are kept alive through informal jam circles. And workshops and concerts help musicians of all ages and abilities delve deeper into the music.

Kids have a place at the Gathering too, with special workshops, jams, square dances and concerts geared toward the next generation of old-time aficionados.

The 18th Portland Old Time Music Gathering is taking place January 11-15, 2017 at several different venues, including the Spare Room, Velo Cult, the Moon & Sixpence and the Tiffany Center. See the schedule below and head to BubbaGuitar.com/Gathering for complete information and to purchase advance tickets.
