Portland’s Annual Celebration Of Appalachian Music Goes Virtual

The 22nd Portland Old Time Music Gathering is set for Jan. 14-17; all programming will be available for free

For over 20 years, square dancers, musicians and other fans of traditional Appalachian music have come together for the Portland Old Time Music Gathering. In 2021, the connection continues but in a fun virtual format.

In addition, the multi-day event will put a special focus on the ways Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) populations have significantly influenced American roots music — and continue to do so today.

The 2021 Portland Old Time Music Gathering (Quarantine Edition!) is taking place Jan. 14-17. It will feature streaming concerts from acclaimed national musicians, acoustic instrument workshops, online jamming, song swaps, a Sunday “ Cabaret”, kids programming and much more.

All events are open to the public and are being presented free of charge. Online donations will be gratefully accepted for performers, workshop leaders, and Bubbaville (the Portland-based nonprofit organization that presents the Gathering each year).

Featured performers include Hubby Jenkins (a longtime member of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops), Houston-based Keyun & the Zydeco Masters, renowned North Carolina fiddle and banjo player Paul Brown, Portland fiddle phenom Annie Staninec, and many others.

In addition, on Sunday, Jan. 17, acclaimed musicians Tatiana Hargreaves and Jake Blount will lead an online panel discussion on the Black and Indigenous roots of old time music.

Concerts will be streamed on The Portland Old Time Music Gathering YouTube channel as well as via the Quarantine Happy Hour Facebook group. All workshops, jams, discussions and other hangout opportunities will take place via Zoom. A children’s show by popular Portland childrens’ entertainer Red Yarn and a “Square Dance for two or more people” will air on the POTMG Youtube channel and on the Portland Old-Time Gathering Facebook page.

About the Portland Old Time Music Gathering
The Portland Oregon Old Time Music Gathering is a grassroots volunteer-run festival that aims to celebrate and enrich the community of traditional old-time Appalachian style stringband musicians. We wish to create an environment where the music is as meaningful as it is when we gather to swap tunes and play in a friend’s living room or meet to play at a campsite during a summer festival. As such, we feel that it is important to keep the event non-profit and volunteer run; whether we are taking tickets, sweeping the floor, organizing an event, or playing music for a concert; we are all volunteers contributing to make this thing happen. And in 2021, we’re moving it all online to keep our community safe but still connected!
